All About The Boys: The Art of Shaving

Today I am talking about shaving. I personally love my husband to have a clean, smooth, well shaven face. Some of you might love a little stubble or even a beard - but for those of you who are with me, this is the article for you.

What type of razor should he use?
There are a couple of choices - electric, disposable, straight edge, safety. It's best that a good quality multi-blade safety razor is used rather than a disposable razor, and a straight edge is definitely for the professionals. Multi-blade razors provide the closest possible shave. The only drawback can be that the closeness of its shave can cause the hair to grow back with a slight curl, which can ultimately lead to razor bumps and ingrown hairs. A good multi-blade razor is the Mach-3.

Double-edged safety razors are classic with a single, well-sharpened double-edged blade. They don't cut as close as razor cartridges, but they still shave well, and they prevent bumps and irritation. Their one disadvantage is a tendency to cause shaving nicks. It is important will all safety razor cartridges and razor blades is for them to be sharp. They should be replaced at the most every four weeks.

Electric shavers are convenient, fast, long-lasting and no cuts. A rotary shaver has a series of blades organized in a circular pattern on anywhere from one to three wheels. As you move the shaver across your face, the spinning wheels cut the beard like a lawnmower. Rotary shavers excel at cutting longer beards. A foil shaver contains a thin sheet of metal perforated with hundreds of tiny holes. Underneath this metal sheet are one to four horizontal rows of tiny cylindrical blades. As the shaver moves around your skin, the whiskers enter the holes, whereupon the spinning blades cut them off. The latest in sonic technology, the Braun Pulsonic is a leader for electric shaving.

I decided to ask expert Wendy Cocchia, owner of the Absolute Spa Group for her tips to the cleanest shave:
1. Anti-oxidant pre-shave is essential (will perk up the hair follicles in preparation for shaving)
2. Use warm towels or steam to soften the area to be shaved
3. Always use moisturizing shave lather or shave cream
4. Shave in the direction of hair growth and apply shave lather a second time and shave in the opposite direction of hair growth, this will give the closest shave (do not apply pressure at any time when shaving).
5. Finish with an alcohol free after shave balm, alcohol will cause skin irritations and ingrown hairs.

Here are some suggested products that he can use:

Anthony Logistics For Men Pre-Shave Oil
Blend of lightweight essential oils, softens the beard and prepares the skin for shaving. Helps prevent razor burn, especially good for those with heavy beards or those prone to razor bumps and in grown hairs.

Sabon NYC Shaving Cream

With white tea oil, coconut oil, aloe, shea butter, olive oil, grapeseed oil and jojoba; this one-of-a-kind cream is the ideal pre-shaving salve.

Kiehl's Close-Shavers Shaving Formula
Formulated for men with sensitive skin, ingrown hairs, razor burn, or a tough beard, our dual-purpose formula is ideal as a pre-shave hair softener or for creative shaving. Blending some of the most efficacious natural oils, this shave oil protects, comforts, and moisturizes skin for a smooth, comfortable shave.

Sabon NYC Aftershave
The ultimate skin protector: With white tea oil, chamomile, aloe and shea butter. This aftershave will calm and condition your sensitive skin and leave a gentleman’s face dangerously smooth.

Clinique Skin Supplies for Men Post-Shave Soother Beard Control Formula
Helps make beard hair softer and finer over time so shaves are easier, smoother. Last longer. Soothing formula comforts just-shaved skin. Encourages healing of minor nicks, cuts. For all skin types.

The Art of Shaving Ingrown Hair Night Cream
Effectively accelerates the relief of ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Pure, unrefined African shea butter softens the skin, allowing ingrown hairs to break free, as jojoba oil moisturizes and unclogs pores. White willow bark and meadowsweet extract, containing salicilin, gently exfoliate and release the trapped hair. Therapeutic essential oils reduce inflammation, while botanical extracts rich in fruit acids improve the skin's texture.

Tasty Stuff from Jelly Pong Pong

Jelly Pong Pong have this month launched two utterly scrumptious new glosses, blended with either real liquorice, or real milk. Sounds a little odd but bear with me...they look great, smell great, contain UVA & UVB protectors, and are packaged really rather delightfully in a little recipe book.

Real Milk Lip Gourmet: The purity of milk as well as its ability to nourish and soothe your skin has been relied on for centuries.

Real Liquorice Lip Gourmet: This age-old herb has anti-inflammatory properties for calming inflamed areas of the skin. Acting as a demulcent, it soothes and coats your lips as well as leaving behind a warm herbal flavour and cosy tingle.

Sounds like lip-licking stuff!

All About The Boys: FRAGRANCE

All my life I have adored men's cologne. It just smells so...manly! Today as part of this week's Men's focus I share with you 'Fragrance'...

A little background:
At the beginning of the 18th century, Italian expatriate Johann Maria Farina created a new fragrance and named it after his new residence, Cologne. Since then the men's fragrance market has been growing leaps and bounds and was estimated to exceed $2.5 billion in 2006. “In 2006, a men’s scent was actually the top selling prestige fragrance for 9 out of 12 months,” said Karen Grant, senior beauty industry analyst, The NPD Group. “This appears to be a more recent trend, picking up momentum each year. For example, if you look back to 2003, there was only one month when a men’s fragrance was the number one seller. By 2005, a men’s fragrance was number one 5 months out of 12,” said Grant.

The basic difference between perfume and cologne is in their strength. While both perfume and cologne are made from denatured ethyl alcohol and essential oils, perfume and eau de parfum contain between fifteen and twenty-two percent essential oils; eau de cologne contains only between four percent essential oils.

How to wear cologne:

Less is more is always the best motto when applying a scent - whether you are female or male. If you have a traditional bottle of cologne without a spray nozzle, simply place your finger over the opened bottle and tip it over to wet your finger. Apply to your pulse points: wrists, neck, and behind the ears.

If you use aftershave, do not use a different brand of cologne. It is okay to layer scents as long as they are the same brand. Layering scents would consist of using the same brand of lotion and shower gel as your cologne.

Please note that Cologne typically has a shelf life of 3-5 years. It's best to let it go after that - no keeping that signature fragrance for decades!

Here are some suggested products for making him smell delicious:

Lacoste Elegance
The captivating new male fragrance from Lacoste, captures the stops-you-in-your-tracks charisma and utterly mesmerising style of the contemporary gentleman. Combining a woody, spicy masculinity and distinctive dry down with an oriental fougère bouquet, Lacoste Elegance is simultaneously deep and bright, bitter yet sweet.

Intimately Beckham
Intimately Beckham projects the edgy, sexy side of David. A modern woody-spicy accord radiating warmth and sensuality. A heady mix of energy, vibrancy, comfort and warmth.

Happy for Men
A men's version of Clinique's classic fragrance. Cool and crisp with a hint of citrus. Designed to be worn every day, this fragrance is light with Jamaican ginger, citrus and amber undertones.

This scent is a more mature re-interpretation of the irreverence of HUGO, modernised with the emphasis of the mint and basil heart notes which create an aromatic green bouquet.

Fashion Week: Retro Glamour Graces the Runway

Gilles Mendel unveiled his Spring 2008 Collection at New York Fashion Week. Stunning runway-ready hair with soft and smooth retro glam waves complemented the collection perfectly.

ghd styling irons and products were onsite to create these looks, with the ghd directive team working alongside world-renowned stylist Odile Gilbert. "The designer drew inspiration for the clothing and hair from Lauren Hutton circa 1974 in St. Tropez," explains ghd lead stylist Omar Lopez.

What was used:
ghd Creation Spray - Odile and the ghd team used this must-have product prior to curling to protect models’ hair and provide a long-lasting hold.

ghd IV Styler - the revolutionary “IV styler”, ghd’s newest iron, was used to achieve the 70s-inspired style.

ghd Ultimate Hairspray - formulated to provide a firm hold, yet light enough to let hair your hair move, the ghd team sprayed this on models’ hair after the curls were brushed out to maintain the retro glam waves for all the trips down the catwalk.

How to get this look:
Use the ghd styler to curl the hair, starting just a few inches away from the scalp to the ends. Holding the styler vertically, clamp hair in between then turn the styler 180° so the hair is twisted around part of the styler. Pull the styler through the hair slowly to create the curl (the process is similar to curling a ribbon with scissors). When finished, use fingers to slightly brush out the curls for soft, romantic waves.

For catwalk-perfect hair ghd, suggested these steps:
Step 1 – cleanse & nourish: Select a prescriptive shampoo, conditioner and treatment for your hair type, all with UV protection.
Step 2 – protect: Protect hair with a prescriptive thermal protector for heat-styling.
Step 3 – style: Heat-activated protection for creating any look.
Step 4 – finish: Create the ultimate end result for every style, all with UV protection.

You just have to check out the HOT pink IV styler that has been launched for Breast Cancer Awareness Month - it is fab looking!

Emmy Winning Lips

The 59th Primetime Emmy Awards were shown last night on TV. I personally am far more excited to see the Red Carpet portion of the awards show than the awards themselves! As mentioned in my Emmy article last week (click here) lips were definitely the facial focus.

Katherine Heigl, dressed in Zac Posen, showed off her stunning white smile with a fantastic bright red lip.

Heidi Klum is all glamour and glitz with her black liquid liner, cherry lips and strapless Dior gown.

Christina Aguilera looks like a modern Jane Mansfield with her pouty red lips, ultra-long lashes and pale blonde chignon. Aguilera wore a beautiful white Valentino gown with black accents.
